The hospital first opened its doors in 1904 in Norwich, Connecticut. It was built in an idyllic location chosen for its therapeutic properties overlooking the River Thames.
The Norwich Insane Asylum was built isolated from civilization, which worked to its benefit as it began to grow during its early years sprouting new buildings that accompanied the original construction (see aerial view of the hospital here). These new construction projects included patient wards, staff cottages, laboratories and workshops. All of the structures were interconnected by a large network of underground utility tunnels. These tunnels transported electricity, hot water, and patients to various areas on the grounds. The hospital remained self-sufficient, almost like a small town, with its own power plant, pump house, working farm, kitchen, theater and church.
Over 3,000 patients and 1,000 employees were residents on the asylum grounds in the 1950’s.
Slowly patients began to leave Norwich State Hospital due to deinstitutionalization and it permanently closed its doors in 1996. Since then time has basically stood still on the property with a few exceptions. Currently there is talk about converting the grounds into a theme park, but nothing has been set in stone.
After a long tedious drive we leave the car in a commuter parking lot close to the buildings. Ever the vigilant group of explorers we notice a State Trooper making his rounds and dive into the forest for cover. Luckily we outsmarted the police yet again and after regrouping walk along the Thames River for a few hundred feet. We finally see the abandoned pump house looming in the distance and decide to make this our entryway into the campus.
This site has a reputation for being well guarded, well patrolled, and does not take kindly to trespassers. I am always on edge when exploring across the Atlantic and the numerous “State Property – No Trespassing” signs that litter the grounds did not bode well for my paranoia. Instead of exposing ourselves above ground to security and prying eyes, we decided to take the underground route through the utility tunnels.
Using the tunnels we explored many buildings without ever being forced to go outside. This method of travel was soon confirmed to be the safest. On our first attempt to venture outside we were only a few feet away from a security officer in a black uniform. Fortunately he didn’t look our way and we quickly receded back into the tunnel network. For a while we hid in the abandoned theater so we could look around the campus without being seen.
This encounter with security dampened our spirits and made our visit a whole lot shorter than we would have liked. We made our grande exit through the empty chapel, this allowed us to avoid walking back through the forest. As we were walking back to the commuter lot to pickup our car we noticed the State Trooper had been watching us as we suspiciously walked down the road. I wonder where we went to and were coming back from?!

nothing big last week, there budget was cut another $37,500 from security salvage and demo they want to buy a new lawn mower for $13,200 power to be connected to the admin biulding in 2 weeks (last week) 2 alarms were installed by Stanley Solutions they are most worried about there new logo and web site than anything else by Miranda Creative there thinking phase 1 will not cost anything they think after abaitment of a building, demolishon will be free of charge
Im am very much aware of what I say public and private...I know the legal lines well and love dancing on them....(please dont picture my 6'5" 360lbs ass dancing!!!) and Im also aware that this is entertainment and while I appear riled up and going crazy... Im actually sitting quite relaxed on a golf course with my girl and laughing...IF its the guards there now (Day and zimmerman) we have seen em up close and its 2 scrawny kids geeking around the place together...someone could easily pull their arms off and slap them around with em!! Im just playin back...if I get that upset...you wont read it here...itll be in the papers! and upon closer inspection of the "guard" posts....it seems familar...

Why would the town be so adverse to anyone wanting to take pictures of the buildings, inside and out? Theres certainly no liability issues in the pictures themselve, that I could see. If someone went running around inside and a building collapsed, that would be one thing(I would imagine you would be signing an"At your own risk" clause anyway) but for Gods sake, the seem almost paranoid that someone will get some pictures of the place!
What someone needs to do, is sign an agreement with the town to split profits on a book for letting them take pictures, or some other deal.
We laugh at absurdity, otherwise we would have no reaction to much of life. Should we find this amusing, or terrifying?

I saw that coming, there were only 2 crews there before you, Discovery Chanel paid $1000, and Ghost Hunter Paid $1000 per day and was there 4 days, they signed a no photograph agreement, I don't know what is up with the no pictures thing I guess they are afraid you will steal the hospital soul.
Yeah, Preston is broke, this whole areas starting to take the beating of budget cuts and whatnot. What are the details here? It would be great to actually be able to take the time to set up shots and not worry about sec. for once...

Thanks, I thought that had to be it, I've seen the lights on in that building and figure there prob hardwire to there, they talk about the power to the pump house in the rear and how there was a bad check valve that ran there electric bill through the roof, they want to run power to admin building still, they were going to run power to Kettle but gave up the idea when they saw the costs and are hoping the construction crews will have there own power(hahah)
your right about the wildlife but its going to depend on what sensors they are using to set off the alarm, door sensors would be stuipid because I've never used a door to go in or out of any where there, the state blocked most of them, sound sensors would be stupid because there is so much noise in those buildings when it rains, heat from the sun cooling at night, the sensitivity would have to be turned up on them. motion sensors are the most likely, there are some used for homes with pets so if a small animal walks by it they don't going to go off. they don't work with large dogs.

they estimate that the buildings are boken into twice a night and all there after is copper pipes, someone got it in there head the copper can pay for some of the demoing. yet they haven't sent anyone in to get there copper for themselfs.
The chiller is the building behind cemetary...it was a chilled water plant wich was brand new and never turned on! its where guards heat food use bathroom etc... the alarms will be awesome! trip em an move! haha...what a stupid idea that was! there is power thru the campus...there are pumps by river and the pier lights chiller lights etc...so they may hardwire the alarms but they are gonna learn fast how much wildlife lives in there and whoever responds to the alarms is gonna hate it!! I imagine they will charge per call...wich is gonna add up quick!

1st very important alarms were purchased and to be installed on the 15th, thats yesterday!!! I belive they were going to put them in the admin building, chiller and power plant they are going to waste money from grants. I do not know what kind of alarms, how they are powered or who they will call. I imagen they are hardwired to the building behind the cemetary (has power and security hangs out there)

I have no idea, I haven't heard anything on how they offed themselfs, reading news paper articles back from the 1950's it was a comon thing to find a car with couples, siblings and entire familys in a car with a hose run into it from the exaust pipe. they were found in an impala but no year was stated, if its an older one then it would be an easy way to do it you would just fall asleep. if its a newer car enless you do something to richen the fuel mixer a little and hollow out the cat it would take a long time to doit that way. maybe they found a bottle of pills in the car. more than likely they found something in the car to get them talking right away about how its not a crime and no one is being looked for, maybe they found a note or video tape detailing there intentions.

Funny how police are stating these 2 deaths are a result of suicide before the autopsy has been done. It appears that there is no obvious cause of death as yet and for now the police are just guessing, although as they were brother and sister it does seem plausible it could be some kind of suicide pact... But why pull off a main road into some woods to kill yourself in your car?

most people don't know about that little dirt road, its no reallt a dirt road, if you pick it up its crushed asfault where the raod has disintergrated, that the road to the "crematorium" there are foundations and another building back there, I've seen kids ridding quads in there.

Preston — Police have identified the two people who were found dead Saturday in a car located in a wooded area of Route 2A as a brother and sister from Windsor Locks.
Police said Richard Lafleur, 53, and his sister Celia Lafleur, 47, were discovered in a Chevrolet Impala about 500 feet down dirt pathway off Route 2A around noon Saturday.
Police said based upon the physical condition of each body both subjects were pronounced dead at the scene. Police said there appears to be no criminal aspect to their deaths.
The state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said the cause of death was pending further studies. Police said the medical examiner reiterated that the deaths were not the result of a crime.
