Norwich-State-Hospital
The hospital first opened its doors in 1904 in Norwich, Connecticut. It was built in an idyllic location chosen for its therapeutic properties overlooking the River Thames.
The Norwich Insane Asylum was built isolated from civilization, which worked to its benefit as it began to grow during its early years sprouting new buildings that accompanied the original construction (see aerial view of the hospital here). These new construction projects included patient wards, staff cottages, laboratories and workshops. All of the structures were interconnected by a large network of underground utility tunnels. These tunnels transported electricity, hot water, and patients to various areas on the grounds. The hospital remained self-sufficient, almost like a small town, with its own power plant, pump house, working farm, kitchen, theater and church.
Over 3,000 patients and 1,000 employees were residents on the asylum grounds in the 1950’s.
Slowly patients began to leave Norwich State Hospital due to deinstitutionalization and it permanently closed its doors in 1996. Since then time has basically stood still on the property with a few exceptions. Currently there is talk about converting the grounds into a theme park, but nothing has been set in stone.
After a long tedious drive we leave the car in a commuter parking lot close to the buildings. Ever the vigilant group of explorers we notice a State Trooper making his rounds and dive into the forest for cover. Luckily we outsmarted the police yet again and after regrouping walk along the Thames River for a few hundred feet. We finally see the abandoned pump house looming in the distance and decide to make this our entryway into the campus.
This site has a reputation for being well guarded, well patrolled, and does not take kindly to trespassers. I am always on edge when exploring across the Atlantic and the numerous “State Property – No Trespassing” signs that litter the grounds did not bode well for my paranoia. Instead of exposing ourselves above ground to security and prying eyes, we decided to take the underground route through the utility tunnels.
Using the tunnels we explored many buildings without ever being forced to go outside. This method of travel was soon confirmed to be the safest. On our first attempt to venture outside we were only a few feet away from a security officer in a black uniform. Fortunately he didn’t look our way and we quickly receded back into the tunnel network. For a while we hid in the abandoned theater so we could look around the campus without being seen.
This encounter with security dampened our spirits and made our visit a whole lot shorter than we would have liked. We made our grande exit through the empty chapel, this allowed us to avoid walking back through the forest. As we were walking back to the commuter lot to pickup our car we noticed the State Trooper had been watching us as we suspiciously walked down the road. I wonder where we went to and were coming back from?!

Special thanks to Dr. Bob for sharing the old postcards.
No..This is the first I am hearing of said demolition.. However..A source says there has been increased traffic of state workers in and out of there..mainly in the back of the campus. I would think any info about the sale of the property would be immediately published.. it would be big news to a small town paying a butt ton of money for an empty institution that no-one is allowed to see.. I will have to dig into this one.
So someone tells me a deal went through, sold and demos planned, I've been dreading this day... Anyone know more on this? Hai sparkles, good to here from you!
Sparkles..Glad you had fun on your excursion! Sucks that I'm leaving now..hahaa. Surely you don't feel left out of the forum..you were mentioned quite a few times in recent posts during your absence..Bomb has had a long face on since you left as well. I was mad you weren't here to defend the subject of paranormal for us..However I'm sure you've read up on our posts now..it being that you as well mentioned some sort of Bunny rampage in NSH..haha Did you hear about the dogs that shoot bee's out of their eyes as the new security as well?? ..lol welcome back
actually i dont have a hangover was just singing the song in my head. i used to drink a lot of whiskey but nowadays i just stick to beers, mostly whatever tastes good, i like a good german beer but i have been into the small brewerys lately. although budwiser is always good too when you dont care what it tastes like lol
haha. Chris, I see you've picked up on my little nickname for John; bombdiggitydouchebag. lmao. It's sad to hear bunnies scream (coyotes kill them a lot where I live)
I'm sad that you all don't talk to me like you used to. I'm lonely. haha. I ended up not checking out the hospital in Goldsboro. But I plan on going back to NSH soon. Chris, has anyone else contacted you at all? Call me when you can.
And as far as paranormal goes, yes many things can be debunked but there are things that have no explanation. I myself saw an apparition one time. And I know I wasn't seeing things because it called me by name. (No, I am not crazy. Contrary to what you've read, I'm sort of sane. haha)
I like whiskey. Scotch, in particular. Normally drink J&B at home, Dewars when I'm out, and Glenlivet on occasions. I dont imbibe to the extent of suffering the morning after effect any more, as the hangovers hurt more than they used to! But sitting back after a stressfull day and sipping a nice scotch on the rocks...Ahhhhh. I'll raise a glass of good bourbon and others also. JD makes an excellent additive to sauce for bread pudding, and barbeque sauce.
Winter calls for Jagermeister, or a snifter of brandy, or congnac.
Summer is Capns Parrot Bay and mango or papiya juice with crushed ice. The Key lime CMPB is awesome straight up frosted.
But I dont care for beer. Tastes like dried hay soda. Blech.
What does this have to do with U.E.? Nothing really. I just enjoy a good whiskey.
(Note to Archie- every other drink, make it a glass of water. Cuts down the hangover)
i must say there are some very interesting things that can be found in the desert. i used to be more into like old gold rush towns and stuff like that, theres a ton of them up in alaska. i saw a show once about one gold mineing operation that had been abandoned and the machinery had like an inch of gold particles that layered the bottom floor of this huge machine but the machine was so rusted that it wasnt safe to go down there to get the gold. very interesting stuff. also there are a ton of abandoned places along the platte river that make for awsome exploreing. i found a ton of abandoned farms with some pretty crazy stuff still inside them. good stuff
I'll be sure to check that out.
Don't know anything near Pinedale... hah actually I'd never heard of Pinedale until you mentioned it. 200 miles from where I live.
I mentioned Trotting Park already in my last comment... it wouldn't be a long haul from Sky Harbor Airport if you are flying into Phoenix. Here are a couple of pics one two
And a short description
"It is the abandoned Phoenix Trotter Park just outside of Goodyear, AZ and is very visible from Interstate 10. Opened in 1965 & abandoned a few years later, was used for harness racing. It was originally to be built for $3 million, but after Italian architects & contractors were brought in, it wound up closer to $10 million, bankrupting its builder. Some future travelers from space probably will regard it in the same way Stonehenge in Britain is regarded today - a monument built in the desert by sun worshipers. Sad story from start to finish. "
FireyFate, You might want to look at flights to Providence as well. I travel to Az and Nv frequently and most of the time the flights to and from Providence are cheaper. They're both just about the same distance to Norwich. I'll be in Az (Pinedale) around the end of July for a week or so if you know of any good spots around there.
Yeah... I actually looked up some mines and ghost towns in AZ today... but seriously none of our "wild west" stuff has NEAR the same mystique as NSH.
Trotter Park in Goodyear AZ looks pretty damned interesting, if you haven't heard of it... I've got a good link saved on my work computer I can post tomorrow.
Still, it would be a crying shame to miss NSH. I'm guessing America won't have many sights like this left in a few years. I just checked flights to Hartford, looks like about 300 for round trip in June... I'm going to seriously consider it. I'm an infiltration newb... but I might just have to do this.
An obsession for NSH is easy to do..However if I were in Arizona I could easily find a good mine..or even a FOX animation studio to have fun with.. Just a thought ..If you do plan to check out Norwich..I suggest doing so soon..
This is the first I've ever heard of this place. I'm all the way out in Arizona... but I need to scratch up the money and fly out to see this place... It's probably going to turn into an obsession!
05/05/2010 09:00 PM GHOST HUNTERS, SEASON 6 NORWICH STATE HOSPITAL
But of course. I would expect no less.
Anyone know whan TAPS will air the NSH episode? I heard in May, sometime.
I have a pretty good idea of what he'll do with it.
Whatever you do, do not give him a carrot-you don't want to find out what he'll do with that...
I just saw the video From undergrounds to rooftops..That was awesome.. What else you gotten hidden away! Your video's are pretty awesome..I watched the interviews on your youtube as well..obviously there is a language barrier..however it was really cool. ..you should post undergrounds to rooftops in you video section bud..it's awesome.
..As would kiddy porn.
I dont know if I would send a virus to a Military base...might b frowned upon! just sayin...
You could always just send me his IP address ..I have a neat little package I can send him Via an .exe file conveniently named "click me" ..then he will have to explain to AVCRAD why their computer say's "John Barry is a moron" and wont boot an o.s Norton doesn't block stupidity you know!
Bomb has no privacy..The FBI will soon be confiscating Bomb's computer..Child porn off of Kazaa and Bearshare are being tracked now..Boo for Bomb.. His alias and his real name will soon enough be posted in a sex offender registry near you!! Wish I was a moderator here..for the greater good.
Option B is not an option, JPT. A static IP, morever being listed on this page - I won't tell more, privacy first!
Well..it being that i didn't post the last post in my name.."leave me alon" ..It's bomb for sure. I could care a less about bomb's rambling.. It was just brought to my attention by the REAL slyv ..lol Sparkles told me the story about him in the "casino" ..and also how he was born in Norwich.. which would almost explain a few things... I hit a "nerve" not a weakness? isn't that hand in hand? So..what your saying is in fact that your wife is in fact pissed off that you ramble on about 13 year old girls from myspace..or is it that they are younger than 13 and your offended that I mentioned older girls for you? Almost 100% sure Slyv does enjoy "stirring the pot" ..however..As do I. ..Not for the sake of argument..But because Bomb's an idiot with a huge imagination..I enjoy that fact that after he reads the posts here you can almost picture him Slamming these "words" into his keyboard while his face is turning 10 different colors.. F**k Him..He posed as a State Official..was almost..almost elaborate about it..Created an email address etc..By all means..he'd better stay in his little shack..before he really hears what I got to say.
Its always John. always. he fails to grasp the fact that people can tell its him based on the content aswell as awful spelling. notice when hes called out on something he disapears for a little while then returns with same nonsense! he dosent know what an IP addy is so he will argue its not him...we are dealing with a retard and compulsive liar here...and in real life too....Sparkles and I have made this idiot jump thru hoops and listened to him lie while watching him!! its fun to see him in his little guard shack typing away slowly...(suggestion) call AVCRAD and mess with him...its wicked fun!! like when he says hes high rollin at Casino on the phone...and we call AVCRAD and he answers!! every time too! that was soooo fun...the stutter really gets bad as his lies get worse too...that stuff is funny as hell! point is take away his voice by ignoreing him...and its back to Myspace...
Sparkles is laying next to me and says HI...and Bomb is a toolbox...
we will reeeturn this week.
Tunnelbeast and Bomb are the same person, per their IP.
A) That assumes the poster is the real Sylv, and not an imposter as has been repeatedly shown possible here. I would think it is, as Sylv does enjoy the idiotic babblings of JPT among others here, and would most likely delete an imposter posting, so for the sake of argument, lets allow its the real Sylv. B) Is it possible that Sylv misread the IP of the two posters in question? C) Is it possible that Sylv is stirring the proverbial pot? D) Is it possible that either of the posters in question have been routing their posts thru the others system? E) Is it possible that John has assumed another alias besides Bomb to post, as Tunnelbeast?
As one of the boards more vocal skeptics, I feel it should be pointed out that there are other possibilities. Bear in mind, also, past behaviours, and that the most obvious and mundane solution is most probably the truth.
Chill cholos! Can't we all just... Ummm...wait, how does that go again? Ahhhh nevermind-carry on...
then leave me alon.i think what you meant to say was you hit a nerve not weakness
Whoa..i guess i hit a weakness ..Bomb be careful..this is a family forum.. we might have children viewing..wouldn't want them to have to read a bunch of vulgarities.
hey chris grow the fuck up an to tunnelbeast fuck you to hey chris fuck the urban explores to now what spell check !
After seeing "venus" post here I started a Blogger.. I will be posting pictures and stories of my "recent" explores there..until of course I can get funds in order to host a website of my own. Hoping that I wont have to do much of the coding and what not..although moderating it will be fun for sure.
