Norwich-State-Hospital
The hospital first opened its doors in 1904 in Norwich, Connecticut. It was built in an idyllic location chosen for its therapeutic properties overlooking the River Thames.
The Norwich Insane Asylum was built isolated from civilization, which worked to its benefit as it began to grow during its early years sprouting new buildings that accompanied the original construction (see aerial view of the hospital here). These new construction projects included patient wards, staff cottages, laboratories and workshops. All of the structures were interconnected by a large network of underground utility tunnels. These tunnels transported electricity, hot water, and patients to various areas on the grounds. The hospital remained self-sufficient, almost like a small town, with its own power plant, pump house, working farm, kitchen, theater and church.
Over 3,000 patients and 1,000 employees were residents on the asylum grounds in the 1950’s.
Slowly patients began to leave Norwich State Hospital due to deinstitutionalization and it permanently closed its doors in 1996. Since then time has basically stood still on the property with a few exceptions. Currently there is talk about converting the grounds into a theme park, but nothing has been set in stone.
After a long tedious drive we leave the car in a commuter parking lot close to the buildings. Ever the vigilant group of explorers we notice a State Trooper making his rounds and dive into the forest for cover. Luckily we outsmarted the police yet again and after regrouping walk along the Thames River for a few hundred feet. We finally see the abandoned pump house looming in the distance and decide to make this our entryway into the campus.
This site has a reputation for being well guarded, well patrolled, and does not take kindly to trespassers. I am always on edge when exploring across the Atlantic and the numerous “State Property – No Trespassing” signs that litter the grounds did not bode well for my paranoia. Instead of exposing ourselves above ground to security and prying eyes, we decided to take the underground route through the utility tunnels.
Using the tunnels we explored many buildings without ever being forced to go outside. This method of travel was soon confirmed to be the safest. On our first attempt to venture outside we were only a few feet away from a security officer in a black uniform. Fortunately he didn’t look our way and we quickly receded back into the tunnel network. For a while we hid in the abandoned theater so we could look around the campus without being seen.
This encounter with security dampened our spirits and made our visit a whole lot shorter than we would have liked. We made our grande exit through the empty chapel, this allowed us to avoid walking back through the forest. As we were walking back to the commuter lot to pickup our car we noticed the State Trooper had been watching us as we suspiciously walked down the road. I wonder where we went to and were coming back from?!

Special thanks to Dr. Bob for sharing the old postcards.
Were from Canada eh. hows aBoUt we sneak into the Toronto bldg and have a looksie?
NSH has been quite a hotspot lately..I've seen groups going in one after another of explorers..even people from Quebec having their hand at the site. Interesting..
i was in auto zone yesterday and i saw one of the securitas dudes (or whatever they are that gaurd nsh,) im curious if he was buying some part that bomb probably ripped off the car to be funny, at least i thought it was funny walked out the store with a smile. anyways, i think the whole silence of the lambs trilogy or however many movies they made was a very interesting look into what it truely means to use more of youre brain and explore various things than most people dont get the chance to. although people that do crazy shit are mostly insane i think what is the most interesting is there logic to complete the acts they think about. very interesting.
Surprisingly enough..The only animals I have encountered here were birds ..alive and dead..And I haven't encountered any signs of homeless folk..living on site. I'm sure if this hospital wasn't in such a "nice" area ..there would be a few squatters. There wouldn't be to many places to hide from explorers here..also the lack of running water ..and as you stated before..not much to eat aside from abandoned civil defense goodies.. It would make life a bit hard even for the homeless. Although sometimes you do hear the rustle here and there of god only knows what. I have been to other sites where both of these are true..People and animals finding cover. But not on such a "prime" piece of real-estate.
Just ruminating over recent posts, and it occured to me-Take care that said rodent , now relieved, does not look heavenwards in search of a dry meal!
That brings to mind a question- How much wildlife does inhabit NSH? Rats general inhabit areas with an ample food supply, and as NSH is (with the exception of "homeless" squatters) uninhabited, there would be little to sustain them. I would think that aside from a few field variety of vermin nesting near an outside access, or aerial tenants such as birds and bats, it would be mostly critter-free.
And what of the human population living there? Does anybody have an idea of the homeless situation on site? I would imagine if/when they choose to raze the site and fill in the tunnels, an extensive sweep would be required to make certain no one hiding there would be killed.
And should you wish to know the depths of absolute evil a woman can aspire to , marry one and forget your anniversary!
Women are definitely capable of gruesome shit..And as far as them getting away with it..That whole chromosome thing works out in there favor..She will run free for quite some time if she plays it smart..I watched a special on this women that decapitated her husband and spread his "parts" through town.. SHE reported him missing and got away with it for years before they figured it out. Meanwhile she had killed again by pushing her new husband off a cliff and again reporting it saying he fell when he was taking pictures of the ocean. If a man did this..he would be cuffed and booked so quickly.
As far as Paul goes..Worry not..there are plenty of explorers that pass by to feed him at the least. I am sorry however your "dick is dry" and "foot is wet" that wasn't quite part of the deal with her I'm assuming. You guys amaze me..haha.
I dont know, considering the star female in that movie was already dead, would it be rape, or necrophilia? (I consider her a zombie, by the way she decayed over time from the abuse, was able to "survive" all those years alone in the basement, and passed on the disease via biting. Stereotypical zombie attributes.)
As for a female not being capable, I suggest you Wiki "female serial killers" in general, and Aileen Wuoronos in particular. Women may not be as prolific in violence based situations as men, but those that do embrace violence, are more violent than the men. Perhaps this is because women express their passions more openly, including negative ones? IDK, but I certainly do not want to find out.
The problem with murder these days is the advanced forensics available in todays US society. Of course , they are expensive, and not always fully utilized in every case. But is it worth the risk? You could commit the "prefect crime", but then some homeless guy is hiding in a corner under a pile of junk, sees it, and turns you in for a $500 reward.
And Paul? Dont worry, once the Deadgirl bite kicks in, Sparkles will take good care of you!
are you guys at nsh
A cartoon bird of course! Duh...
Loon... are you saying I'm a bird or a cartoon character?
Aw Homie, I love you! <3</p>
Help me damnit! I brought her explorein and she chained me up down here!! its dark and scary. a rat peed on my foot! dont fall for her! learn from my mistake! Im dying down here...and dicks dry too! my batt is dying...shoulda called the cops....Do'h!
Sparkles has lost her damn mind..haha I suppose she's right though.. It's that whole vagina thing..Girls pack heat 90% of the time. Sparkles however kills you with her bare hands.
Oh and for the record, I have only thought about such things because I have yet to figure out what would drive a person to do them. But I'm not insane so I will probably never figure it out. Still interesting though. I just like to find what makes people tick.
Don't get me wrong, it was a good movie. But it was fucked up. lol. And they totally got what they deserved. But rape? And a sex slave? Wouldn't it be more fun to find a girl who is actually into role playing screwed up scenarios? And not that I'm psychotic or anything, but I've thought a lot about murder and screwed up things before. (I read a lot and watch way too much tv) Somewhere like NSH would be an awesome place to kill someone. Just think, I could lour any of these horny guys wanting to get their dick wet into a place like that. And then when they least expect it, "BAM" haha. No one ever expects a female to be capable of such horrific things. Obviously I would never do anything like that. Paul is still alive and well. lol.
Ah, Sparkles, thou dost wound me most greiviously! I thought it was great! A zombie tied up in the basement of an abandoned asylum? What a concept! You can just hear the administration saying"What do you want to do about "her"? "Hell with it, leave her here, and when the damn place falls down she'll be buried forever."
Ultimate power corupts ulimately. Ricky succumbed to the temptation.
The revenge on the jocks was hilarious! I couldnt see ANYBODY, with half a brain, saying "Sure, I'll do that!" Got everything he deserved.
But overall isnt that the ultimate thrill/horror of U.E.? The thought that you might turn the corner and find a dead body there? Then what do you do? Admit you were in there illegally? Up and run? Or stay, facinated, and look it over?
And then it moves.
I do love horror movies so!
Yea, that's where Hanibal's talking about going when he says anthrax island.
Martin, Glad to see you're back
What's channel 3 all about?
And Plum Island was used during a war (don't remember which one) Now they have different levels of containment throughout the place. They have a lot of animals as test subjects. They pretty much study them and watch them die. There's a book called Plum Island by Nelson DeMille. It's fiction but it has a lot of facts and everything about plum island. Also, anyone ever wonder where Lyme Disease came from? It was first discovered in CT (hence the name) which isn't too far away from the island.... And yes, they shoot animals who leave the island. But what about those they don't catch? Like birds, or fish.....
JPT- Saw the movie and it was one of the most fucked up things I have ever watched. And I was sad because I thought the Ricky kid was all good and everything and that he was going to go on and live a better life. Then in the end... It was disappointing.
A map of Plumb Island is shown in the movie Silence of the Lambs...a full shot of it. its pretty big. check it out.
I would think to contact either DEP (being so close to water) or EPA..or something of that nature. DEP would probably get the right people involved since even the ground water..and soil is said to be contaminated. In the original bid for the property there is an included 8-10 Million dollar cleanup only consisting of asbestos abatement..ground water and soil cleanup..let alone it is claimed no demolition of any building can be underway until all these materials are PROPERLY removed. It has also been said that in the time-line of when most of the property was constructed asbestos was mixed into materials such as the plaster for the walls and even under-lay for the floors. Of course to prove this exists here at Norwich some material testing would be in order. And to have all of that put into motion..we would have some people pretty upset with the actions of a "concerned citizen"..however let me just say.. ...(hypothetically of course..wink..wink) ......channel 3 has an interest not only in Norwich..but oddly enough Urban Explorers as well.
..most government agencys clean up the sites , not so much for the publics health benefit, but more to be sure no person or persons with an agenda aginst the US gets a hold of anything more dangerous than an empty Mountain Dew bottle. Then once they are comfortable that they are 'safe", they open them to public bid, unless there is some other agency or company who has already gotten wind of it, and offered a private deal for the site.
Oh, and a by the by on the who asbestos isuue? Contact OSHA with your concerns. Most of us think it would result in an investigation, and perhaps some fines. If you follow Archies line, you may be handed a $100 bill and told to keep quiet. Either way, wouldnt hurt .
Hey Bleys, if you are ghosting the thread, Sparkles was asking about you.
There's gonna be some good food tomorrow for sure. You are right about the theory of plum island being all above ground..I hadn't really factored in the fact that the water level would rise during storms and such and create a possible issue for the site. I looked at the topography maps..the island is not that much of a high rise at all. Im just curious as to whom has purchased such property..I mean how do you even catch wind of something like that and just all the sudden own a top secret animal disease center..where they're making pigdogracooncows.
Well, considering it is an island, I doubt there would be much below ground, at least not below the waterline. (Key West graveyards are all above ground sarcophogi, because of the water level.) I dont know the topography of the island, but it cant be too tall.
Add to that the risk of flooding, and the water carrying off some of the diseases, and I couldnt see the CDC allowing that for even low level contaminents.
In effect, redacted maps, eh? Well, I could see that. Makes sense, I guess.
And Happy Easter to all out there!
so you like my work.
THere is nothing i hate more than scrappers and shit..makes US look like were doing rotten shit. As far as plum island..im having trouble getting to far into research with it..haha So are you saying that the bingmaps and GE are fake images? ..that'd make me buy a set of scuba gear real quick..I wonder how much of the island is a facility..above ground vs. Underground> Prepare for homeland security to now delete this post.
Ironically, one of the reasons the place got scrapped so bad was the prev. Security co. But yea, the place has already been raped that's why there isn't much left for scrap purposes. You know how those sections of pipe insulation are laying around everywhere, those were on pipes a few years back. That place was full of other interesting stuff too, but alot went the way of craigs list and such-those rotten bastards! Some friends and I had a little something to do with scaring away a few scrappers... Haha!
You guys should really look into plumb island, it's very interesting and very scary.
That's nearly 30 bucks an hour ..i believe.. For a site which they claim has "Nothing of value" inside it.. They're saying they are trying to protect the buildings in order to get the greatest value out of the scrap and what not from the building. Sure..I understand keeping out scrappers..however.. I have been in the nitty gritty of this place..it's not like there is all that much copper etc..and i dont see anyone there with cutting torches and axes. They need to get a grip..Have regular patrols with a local police officer..just like you average neighborhood..perhaps that would save a bit of money.. Then they can stop issuing statements about how broke the town is going.."on all levels" ..oh please. ..its stupidity.
...according to chris, the estimated annual cost for security is $136,250...I could run around there in a little SUV and allow U.E. the run of the place...er, I mean chase off trespassers, for 136K a year!
Makes it sound like its just full of disease and nasty bio-hazard residue. Dont know if I'd like to be buying it, might end up with some mutant Necro-HIV-Herpes bone-eating bug that might be lurking under a leaf! Wonder what type of sterilization techniques they will use to make sure all the germs are gone before releasing it to the next owner?
How'd you like to be exploring that facility, and knock over a box of vials filled with liquid, and hear them smash?
